Personal Statement

As a lifespan developmental psychologist, I am trained to be mindful of the "big picture." I consider not only the current contexts in which individuals live, but also the past and the broader cultural and historical factors that shape people's lives. My commitment to understanding this "bigger picture" is reflected in my teaching in a variety of ways. At the most basic, course-specific level, I want my students to understand how the different components of a single course only make sense in light of the course as a whole. To meet this teaching goal, I make a concerted effort in my classes to connect chapters, lectures, and assignments. At the content-specific level, I want my students to understand the big picture of psychology. In order to help them achieve this goal, I encourage them to interpret real-life experiences through the lens of psychology. At the most abstract but what I view as the most important level, I want my students to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. In addition to learning goals, I place great importance on my relationship with my students and their relationships with each other. Psychology, of all disciplines, should be taught with the whole person in mind. To this end, I strive to get to know my students as individuals with unique life stories, motivations, and goals. By being enthusiastic, open-minded, friendly, and humorous, I create a warm, open, and safe environment both in my classroom and outside of it. Such an environment allows students to freely communicate, feel respected, take intellectual risks, and safely question their assumptions. Although not all of my students will pursue a career in psychology, I hope that for all of them the skills developed, the relationships created, and the assumptions questioned in my classes become integral parts of their lives.

Research Interests

I am interested in the mental and physical health of young, middle-aged, and older adults, especially as a function of social relations and social networks. My colleagues and I have developed a theory of social relations across the lifespan () that emphasizes the important role of context and the social opportunity structure in driving our social relationships (e.g., changes in social relationships and social networks across important life transitions, such as starting college and retirement; COVID effects on social relationships; etc.). According to the DIRe model, individuals' investment of time and energy is the key mechanism driving the formation and maintenance of social relationships. The model also highlights the roles of individuals' capacities, motivations, and skills, as well as the importance of the diversity of social ties in individuals' well-being. My most recent work with colleagues at the University of Tennessee focuses on weak ties - why they are important, and how they shape both well-being and the impact of close ties. I have also explored in my research how individuals in romantic relationships negotiate the merging of their social networks (e.g., upon marriage), and how these 'joint social networks' change over time and influence the trajectory of the relationship (e.g., divorce). I have written several papers on this topic based on the Early Years of Marriage Study, a 16-year longitudinal study of Black and White newlywed couples from Detroit. received much interest in the popular press and won Best Paper award in 2020 from the International Association of Relationship Research.

I am also interested in and have conducted research on related issues, such as interpersonal dependency, attachment, emotions, marriage and divorce, religion, and spirituality. I am actively conducting research on many of these topics, using large publicly-available data sets as well as my own smaller data sets collected from emerging adults and older adults. In addition, I collaborate with colleagues at UT Knoxville in Tennessee, U of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Germany, and Australia on a variety of projects focused on social relations and aging.

I have also conducted research on the adaptive versus maladaptive nature of expressive behavior (in particular, crying). I have published several studies on the nature of crying in psychotherapy, have collected my own data examing the effects of interpersonal dependency and the presence of others on crying, and have also collaborated with researchers in the Netherlands to explore the issue of crying in a large, nationally-representative Dutch data set.

I am open to working with students who have an interest in any of these (or loosely-related) areas. I am particularly interested in working with students who would like experience in collecting and analyzing data and publishing research.

I studied abroad in Berlin, Germany as a college student at Duke University for one semester (Fall 1998) as part of the Duke-in-Berlin program.

In addition, in 2000-2001, I received a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany. I studied at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin where I worked with Dr. Jacqui Smith.

I was also a member of the International Max Planck Research School (LIFE) titled "The Life Course: Evolutionary and Ontogenetic Dynamics" (a graduate training program offered in collaboration between the Berlin Max Planck Institute for Human Development, the University of Michigan, and several other universities in Germany, the US, and now other countries as well). I participated in three LIFE Academies in Berlin from 2002 through 2007, and also had a research stay from April to June 2004 as part of the LIFE program. My dissertation that was partially funded through the LIFE program was titled: "Social Relations and Health Among Older Adults: A Cross-Cultural and Pattern-Centered Approach."

Finally, I maintain an ongoing collaborations with Dr. Oliver Huxhold at the German Centre for Gerontology in Berlin (DZA) (a fellow graduate of the LIFE program), and have visited as a guest scholar several times over the past few years (most recently for 1 week during my sabbatical in March 2017).

Tokyo, Japan

In the summer of 2004 I spent two months in Tokyo, Japan working on my dissertation through the EAPSI Program (East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute) where I worked with Dr. Hiroko Akiyama at the University of Tokyo.
