International Experience

International Experience

I have experience designing, implementing, and/or evaluating sport for development and peace (SDP) programs around the world, including community-based programs with Xhosa youth in South Africa and students in Nigeria. Along with meaningful community engagement experiences in South Africa and Uganda, I conducted two research studies in South Africa exploring the role of sport in promoting youth development along with coaches' experiences in these settings, and I studied the experiences of girls and women in sport in Uganda. I also have experience training coaches, teachers, and practitioners in South Africa and India on SDP concepts, such as teaching life skills through sport-based programs, addressing social issues affecting participation and inclusion (e.g., gender equity, social cohesion), and using sport to reduce ethnic and national tensions. My recent scholarship includes two global systematic reviews of research in the SDP field, along with co-editing a book on “sport in under-resourced, underdeveloped, and conflict regions” around the world. I am also an editor of the peer-reviewed, open-access, international Journal of Sport for Development.
