Mrs. Martinez, a native of Colombia, received a bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Social Communications and Journalism from Bogota and emigrated to the United States in 1997. For the past 16 years, she has worked for the Child Care Council of Nassau as a bilingual parent counselor, providing information to parents and assisting them to meet childcare needs. In Bogota and in New York, Mrs. Martinez worked as a researcher and writer for various Spanish-language media. 鈥淎s a Latina and as an immigrant woman, I understand the barriers minorities face,鈥� she says. 鈥淏ecause of that, I want to make a difference and help people as best I can.鈥�

This year鈥檚 grant will be utilized towards educational forums which focus on medical, psychosocial and wellness topics and are facilitated by experts in various fields of practice. Forums held over ZOOM include live Spanish-language interpretation reaching a broad audience and the many patients the 成人影片 program serves. An upcoming educational forum on Monday, April 24th at 4 pm, will be an intimate panel discussion with couples and how they navigated their spouses breast cancer experience.

Even partners who are strongly committed to one another may face difficult moments when confronted with the extraordinary stress of breast cancer. The three couples talked about their journeys through breast cancer and how they have continued to have lives filled with activity and joy.

Cindy and Bruce met on a blind date 41 years ago. They married, and in 1994, Cindy was treated for breast cancer. Sixteen year later, the couple learned that Cindy鈥檚 cancer had come back. Cindy had a mastectomy of the same breast, followed by chemotherapy. Cindy recalls the difficulty of trying to juggle it all when first diagnosed. She reached out to the Young Women鈥檚 Breast Cancer Support Group at 成人影片 connecting with others in her situation and gaining the support she needed to move forward. Today, Cindy is a volunteer at the 成人影片 NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

Kim and Anthony have been together for 10 years, meeting while Kim was working in a restaurant as a bartender. Anthony is a day trader who attended Columbia University where he was a pitcher for their baseball team. Together they have a daughter named Savannah who is 7 years old. Kim was just 30 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since 2019, Kim has been a volunteer with the 成人影片 Breast Cancer Program helping others going through a similar diagnosis.

Tim and Sandy met at a mutual friend鈥檚 home when Tim was a freshman in college and Sandy a senior in high school. They had been married for 52 years when they learned Tim had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in June 2020. Tim says that not even in their wildest dreams could they have imagined the rollercoaster ride they would embark on. Tim is committed to sharing his story as a volunteer with the 成人影片 Breast Cancer Program and helping other men learn the signs of breast cancer and the importance of performing regular breast self-exams.

Each backpack was filled with the necessary items for children entering all grade levels, from kindergarten to twelfth grade, and was lovingly put together by this inspiring duo.

The breast cancer hotline is available from 9 AM to 9 PM, 365 days a year and is answered in both English and Spanish. The program listens and supports women, men and their families. Individual and family counseling is provided by licensed social workers and peer support is provided by professionally trained and supervised volunteers, all of whom are breast cancer survivors.

鈥淲e are excited to launch text messaging and expand the breast cancer hotline,鈥� says Reyna Machado, director of the program. 鈥淔or over 40 years, the hotline had been providing emotional support as well as resources to the breast cancer community. Text messaging is another way for women and men to reach out and connect.鈥�

By adding text message capabilities to the hotline, messages can be sent to individuals who make contact, coordinate call backs with volunteers and increase efficiency, allowing the program to reach a growing population preferring the ease of communication through text message. 鈥淥ur program is always ready to evolve to meet the needs of the community,鈥� says Foley.

According to Kelsey D鈥橝ndrea, assistant director for the Center for Student and Community Engagement (SCE), the Career Closet takes its cue from the successful Panther Pantry, which provides food and other necessities to members of the community in need. When SCE saw the need for work attire, 鈥渨e thought it would be a good idea to start our own Career Closet,鈥� D鈥橝ndrea said. 鈥淭his is a resource for students who may not be able to afford professional attire, or who may be unsure of what qualifies as professional attire, and need guidance. Professional clothing can be extremely expensive, so this is an option for students who may not be able to get their own professional clothing.鈥�

Inspired by Rent the R耻苍飞补测听

The idea is similar to that of . Jennifer Hyman, CEO and cofounder, was the keynote speaker at 成人影片鈥檚 2024 Women鈥檚 Leadership Conference. She told the audience how she came up with the idea for her company: As a college student, she鈥檇 watched her sister go through her full closet but said she had nothing to wear and that her closet was 鈥渄ead鈥� to her. Hyman asked herself what it would mean for a closet to be alive and what a more environmentally sustainable alternative to fast fashion would look like. According to Hyman, 80 percent of the American wardrobe consists of what鈥檚 termed 鈥渇ast fashion鈥�: inexpensive items that don鈥檛 last beyond a few wearings. Fast fashion is environmentally and socially unsustainable as it is a polluted industry where new clothing items are constantly being bought but never worn.

She created Rent the Runway to give women access to brand-name, designer apparel they could rent and return. 鈥淚 feel that the most powerful thing in particular that you could give to a woman is the power to change,鈥� Hyman said.

Attendees at the Women鈥檚 Leadership Conference were encouraged to donate items. A total of 157 items were collected on this day. Currently, the Career Closet has received up to 400 donations.

How to Access the Career Closet

D鈥橝ndrea pointed out that having the Career Closet on campus鈥攊n Earle Hall basement, Room 010鈥攎akes it convenient for students, especially those who don鈥檛 have access to a car. 鈥淏y having this resource on campus, students can make an appointment in between classes to check out the selection and see if anything may fit what they are looking for.鈥�
