Students will gain an immersive and comprehensive understanding of African Americans’ historical and cultural experiences, fostering a greater appreciation for their contributions to the fabric of American society. Moreover, students will apply critical thinking skills and reflect on the African diaspora’s rich history and culture, including the appreciation of resiliency, perseverance, social, economic, and political activism.

Purpose/Rationale

Provide students with an immersive and comprehensive understanding of African Americans’ historical and cultural experiences, fostering a greater appreciation for their contributions to the fabric of American society.

To expose students to the diverse and lived experiences of African Americans. Learn about the resilience and triumph, showcasing the strength and perseverance of African Americans in the face of adversity.

Benefit to Students

  • Students will learn about the African diaspora and its rich history and achievements in science, technology, literature, arts, and much more.
  • Students will learn the importance of social, economic, and political activism.
  • Students will experience the Washington DC area and museum with their peers and ³ÉÈËӰƬ administrators.

Expectations

Students are expected to approach the museum visit with an open mind, curiosity, and willingness to learn about the African American experience. Students will participate in an educational discussion about what they learned as a result of the museum tour.

Students will listen and share their individual and collective experiences and observations.

  • Date: Friday, February 9, 2024
  • Departure: 5:30 a.m. from ³ÉÈËӰƬ’s University Center (Garden City campus)
  • Return: 10:30 p.m. to ³ÉÈËӰƬ’s University Center (Garden City campus)
  • Cost: Open to all ³ÉÈËӰƬ students at no charge. A $20 deposit is required through credit card to reserve your spot. Your deposit can be made here: . Your deposit will be refunded to your credit card at the end of our trip. Please contact Charlene Mayers if you are unable to deposit with a credit card.
  • Included: Roundtrip transportation, admission to the museum, and meals.
